Pre-registration for car services

All vehicles transported to Iceland must be pre-registered with the Icelandic Transport Authority. In order to pre-register vehicles vehicle dealerships may choose from three options:

  • construct a web interface with a direct connection to the Icelandic Transport Authority's vehicle registration system

  • buy access to an web interface from a service provider

  • apply for a pre-registration by handing in a form.

Pre-registering by web interface

A dealership's staff member must be a valid vehicle agent A in order to pre-register a vehicle.

Supporting documents

  • COC/ECOC or certificate of origin (CO). The ECOC can be submitted electronically. The COC may be scanned, the original COC must be submitted within 10 working days.

When the vehicle has been pre-registered, the vehicle will be assigned a registration number. A confirmation of registration is sent to the vehicle dealership. The Icelandic Transport Authority orders number plates and sends them to the vehicle dealership. Number plate production time is 3 business days.

Customs clearance

A customs declaration can be sent to Customs when the pre-registration process is finished. When the declaration has been processed by Customs and the import fees have been paid the vehicle is formally customs cleared and ready for inspection.

Registration and inspection

If the vehicle dealership has a staff member who is a valid vehicle agent B, they may inspect and register the vehicle. If not, the vehicle must be brought to an inspection station for an inspection and registration.

Cost

In order for a vehicle dealership to get access to a web interface for pre-registrations the dealership must have a charge account with the Icelandic Transport Authority.
