Summary of rules and recommendations for individuals with a history of COVID-19

1.  Mask obligation, restrictions on gatherings, etc.:

  • The same rules apply as to those who have not contracted COVID-19

2.  Vaccinations:

  • COVID-19 vaccination recommended: yes, for ages 12 and older – but not until 3 months after confirmed infection in order for vaccination to provide the best long-term protection.
  • Recommendations regarding booster dose:
      • COVID-19 infection and vaccinated after illness: yes, 6 months after primary vaccination.
      • Fully vaccinated prior to COVID-19 infection: yes, 6 months after COVID-19 infection.

NOTE! Those aged 70 years and older and individuals with immunosuppression aged 12–69 years: Booster dose recommended after 3 months rather than 6 months.

3.  Travel: Note! A tourist must have a certificate of confirmed previous infection (positive PCR) or antibody test for the following to apply. If a rapid antigen test was used to detect COVID-19 infection (abroad), vaccination status alone determines cross-border operations.

  • If you have an antibody certificate or >180 days have passed since the confirmed infection (positive PCR) at the start of the trip:
      • Tourists with no connection to Iceland: Certificate of negative COVID-19 test done by a professional within 72 hours before the start of the trip to Iceland: Mandatory.
      • Tourists with a connection to Iceland: Testing within two days from arrival: Mandatory.
  • 14–180 days from diagnosis of COVID-19 infection confirmed by PCR:
      • Tourists with no connection to Iceland: Certificate of negative COVID-19 test done within 72 hours before the start of the trip to Iceland is not mandatory.
      • Tourists with a connection to Iceland: Testing within two days from arrival is not mandatory.
      • See rules regarding travellers from certain high-risk areas.

4.  Need for testing if symptoms similar to COVID-19 occur: Yes, PCR.

5.  Need for quarantine after exposure according to tracing:

  • >6 months from previous infection: Yes

6.  Need for isolation in case of re-infection according to the COVID outpatient ward: Yes
