Children and the restrictions on gatherings

Schools and athletic organisations carefully organise their schedules to comply with the authorities’ instructions restricting school activities and gatherings, including restrictions on numbers allowed to gather, divisions and mixing in schools and use of facemasks.

When appropriate it is important that children’s parents and guardians reduce the number of people in their children’s contact network outside of school in order to avoid working against the measures in effect.

It is helpful to bear the following in mind:

  • If the children are divided into groups at school then schoolmates who are not in the same group in school should not interact closely outside of school. Organized sports/leisure activity outside of school might be exempted from this according to measures in effect at any given time.
  • If the children are mature enough to obey instructions on reduced contact with friends, it is helpful to remind them of that. They should then not engage in play that involves direct touching, or sharing toys or equipment they touch with their hands.
  • Children and young people should always wash their hands thoroughly, both before they meet their friends and after they come home. Also before meals.
  • Families should bear in mind that if children interact frequently with friends or relatives from other schools or school groups, there will be contact between groups that would otherwise remain separate. If applicable, families are encouraged to use technology or even letter writing to maintain good contact with loved ones who are at risk of severe disease related to COVID-19 — particularly elderly people and those with certain underlying illnesses.

Regarding households with children where not everyone is in quarantine:
If a part of the household is quarantined after travel or is quarantined due to close contact with a person infected with COVID-19, the whole household must be quarantined or those who are not quarantined must go elsewhere as soon as the quarantine begins. Possibly one parent can be in quarantine with a child, but then the other parent will have to move out temporarily. The same applies to other children in the household who are not in quarantine. A parent with a child in quarantine due to close contact with an infected person does not need to be registered in quarantine and does not need to go for screening to shorten quarantine to 7 days from 14 days. It is enough that the child is registered in quarantine and goes for testing.
