Information on opening hours of testing centres for COVID-19 screening/testing

Leaving Iceland?
Information on this page does not apply to COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen testing prior to departure from Iceland. That service is offered in Reykjavik and Akureyri by the primary health care service (travel.covid.is) as well as independent laboratories (Reykjavik, Akureyri, Reykjanesbaer/Keflavik). This service is not available all over the country. The Directorate of Health is not responsible for this service and any inquiries about the service must be directed to the service providers.

Where and when is testing?

  • For entry and quarantine screening you will receive a barcode by email the night before your screening test. Please bring an ID and this barcode to the test.
  • You need to present on the designated day for border and quarantine screening (a later date is also fine but then quarantine is extended).
  • Some centres require an appointment to be made.
  • Clinical testing due to symptoms needs to be ordered on heilsuvera.is or by calling ahead. A barcode will be sent by text message/email.
  • Note variable hours of operation for different centres.
  • Please check opening hours of centre before you go as it can change with short notice.

When do I take a screening test?

Border entry screening, second test in quarantine

Your second PCR test is scheduled 5 days after the first test. For example, if you arrive and take your first test on a Wednesday your second test is on Monday. Day 1 is the day after arrival. You will receive a barcode in the evening of day 4 (in the example on Sunday night) to use for the second test. If you cannot for some reason take the second test after 5 days you can go after 6 days (in the example on Tuesday). Until you receive the results of the second test you must adhere to quarantine but quarantine is lifted if the test is negative (no virus found).

Screening to shorten quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure (contact with a confirmed case)

Quarantine can be shortened for asymptomatic individuals by undergoing a PCR screening test after 7 days of quarantine. If your quarantine started on a Monday your screening will be the following Monday. Day 1 is the day after quarantine started. You will receive a barcode in the evening of day 6 (in the example on Sunday night) to use for the screening test. Until you receive the results of the screening you must adhere to quarantine but quarantine is lifted if the test is negative (no virus found). The next 7 days you still needs to pay special attention to hygiene and basic infection control and avoid contact with vulnerable groups.

Testing after arrival home in Iceland

COVID-19 PCR testing is offered at Keflavik Airport, at Sudurlandsbraut 34 in Reykjavik and in health care centres around the country. Residents of Iceland who need to travel abroad are recommended to undergo a SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 testing upon arrival to Iceland even if they are fully vaccinated or have a history of previous infection. A test can be ordered at www.heilsuvera.is (with electronic ID) (under COVID-19 testing) and choosing Keflavík-Airport as location and the reason as the Chief Epidemiologist´s recommendation. Testing can also be performed soon after arrival at other locations selected: Suðurlandsbraut 34, Reykjavik, or a primary health center outside the capital area.
